Turbulent Times

Por Kristine Balduzzi

In the midst of the historical upheavals that shaped Egypt from 1967 onwards emerges the figure of Ahmed, a young pianist whose life seems to advance with the same uncertain rhythm as his country. While the Six-Day War shakes the Arab world and the occupation of the Sinai disrupts daily life, this musician in his early twenties faces far more intimate tensions: a family frustrated that he has not followed a more “traditional” path, the shadow of an illustrious uncle who once played in Oum Kalthoum’s orchestra, and the desire to find his own voice in an environment that values football more than the arts. His letters to Elizabeth, an Austrian student who looks at him with a blend of tenderness and fascination, offer a small window of hope. Thanks to her, he earns a scholarship in Vienna, where his talent struggles to break through amid academic demands, personal insecurities, and the cautious gaze of the young woman’s father, convinced that an intercultural romance is destined to fail.

Their time together in Europe is marked by a deepening love and by Ahmed’s determination to prove that destiny is not set in stone, even when reality suggests otherwise. When a family tragedy forces him to return to Egypt, the story jumps ahead a decade to show Elizabeth traveling to her beloved’s homeland, confronting a family that barely understands her presence yet welcomes her with the chaotic warmth of an Egyptian household. Amid cultural clashes, awkward gestures, and the promise of a shared future, the couple marries and seeks stability while the country lives through decisive moments: the peace agreements fostered by Jimmy Carter, the assassination of Anwar Sadat, and a succession of political shifts that redefine the national identity. Domestic joys —including the news of a pregnancy— intertwine with unexpected misfortunes, such as the fierce hair loss tormenting Ahmed, portrayed in the film with affectionate humor.

The narrative unfolds as a series of fragments bound by memory, blending archival footage, music, speeches, and football matches to reconstruct a turbulent era without losing sight of the human core. Although its structure is light and at times predictable, the story wins over viewers through the authenticity of its characters, the tenderness with which it handles both tragedy and laughter, and its celebration of the perseverance of an artist striving to find his path amid wars, censorship, disappointment, and a love that refuses to fade.
