Father – MALBA Cine
“Don’t so-called ‘irresponsible’ people also deserve autonomy over their own bodies?”

Por Natalia Llorens

Abortion Party is a provocative work by Julia Mellen that challenges conventional approaches to abortion in cinema. The director draws from a rare personal experience: the party she threw after terminating a pregnancy at the age of twenty. Rather than seeking compassion or sympathy, Mellen presents herself with rawness and humor in front of the camera, delivering a monologue that blends confession and rebellion.

The film’s aesthetic is simple and deliberately rough. Using software not designed for filmmaking, she creates geometric, fragmented characters inhabiting a basic, handmade 3D space. This style reflects a commitment to DIY art and rejects technical perfection. Mistakes are embraced as part of the visual discourse, reinforcing the authenticity of the story.

Far from joining the usual debates that either idealize or demonize abortion, the film adopts an ironic and festive perspective. Mellen rejects the traditional victim role and embraces a contradictory, carefree stance. Her message questions social prejudices that exclude those who don’t fit the “acceptable” mold of an abortioning woman.

The social context of the story is a Mexican neighborhood in Chicago, marked by violence and marginalization, where the director lived before moving to Europe. The party she recounts becomes an intimate and collective portrait, where abortion is merely an excuse to talk about bodies, memory, and resistance. The film mixes cultural references of youth but always from an approach that aims to confront the viewer and challenge political correctness.
