Tres, the short film directed by Juan Ignacio Ceballos, has been selected for the prestigious La Cinef, a section of the Cannes Film Festival dedicated to showcasing emerging voices in cinema from film schools around the world. The 78th edition of the festival will take place from May 13 to 24 and will feature 16 selected titles (13 live-action and 3 animated), chosen from over 2,700 submissions.
The Argentine film portrays an apparently peaceful gathering between three siblings and a guest, which gradually becomes strained by tension and alcohol, revealing deep emotional cracks and a latent darkness. The short was co-written and directed by Ceballos alongside Antonela Scattolini Rossi and produced by Jerónimo Reinhold. The cast includes Gastón Cocchiarale, Pedro Rissi, Maru Blanco, and Lara Crespo.
This year’s La Cinef selection includes works from institutions invited for the first time, such as Escola das Artes (Portugal), Super16 (Denmark), and the Estonian Academy of Arts—marking Estonia’s debut in the competition. Since its inception in 1998, La Cinef has served as a platform for emerging talent, receiving thousands of submissions from across the globe each year.
The jury for La Cinef and the Short Film Competition will be presided over by renowned German filmmaker Maren Ade (Toni Erdmann). She will be joined by American director Reinaldo Marcus Green, French actress and singer Camélia Jordana, Spanish producer José María Prado García, and Croatian director Nebojša Slijepčević.
The La Cinef awards will be announced on Thursday, May 22, during a ceremony at the Buñuel Theatre, where the winning films will also be screened.
Ceballos studied Filmmaking at Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires. He has directed three short films and currently works as a location manager in both film and television. His previous experience also includes working as a production assistant on Entremedio, the debut feature by Martín Gamaler.
