From September 4 to 14, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will celebrate its 50th edition, once again becoming a key gathering point for the global film industry and cinephiles alike. With less than two months to go before opening night, the Canadian festival has unveiled 74 titles that strengthen a lineup promising variety and big names.
Among the most talked-about announcements are Frankenstein, the highly anticipated reinterpretation of Mary Shelley’s classic under the vision of Guillermo del Toro — starring Oscar Isaac — and EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, Baz Luhrmann’s new documentary that expands the universe of the rock icon following his acclaimed musical biopic. Both films will screen in the Galas and Special Presentations sections, showcases that often set the tone for the awards season ahead.
Other renowned filmmakers are also on the bill. Joachim Trier, Richard Linklater, and Gus Van Sant will present new works, joining a roster that includes Steven Soderbergh, Jafar Panahi, Agnieszka Holland, Mary Bronstein, and Benny Safdie. Linklater returns with Nouvelle Vague, a film that blends cinephile nods with his unmistakable style, while Van Sant brings Dead Man’s Wire. Celebrated British actor Brian Cox will make his directorial debut with Glenrothan, and Bobby Farrelly will premiere Driver’s Ed, starring Kumail Nanjiani.
More than 30 productions will have their world premieres in Toronto. Notable among them are Ballad of a Small Player, from German director Edward Berger; Fuze, by David Mackenzie, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James; Couture, by Alice Winocour, with Angelina Jolie at the center of a high-fashion drama; Nuremberg, by James Vanderbilt, featuring Rami Malek and Russell Crowe; Sacrifice, by Romain Gavras, with Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Evans; and Bad Apples, by Jonatan Etzler, led by Saoirse Ronan.
As usual, some films will arrive in Toronto after screenings at other festivals, such as Hamnet, by Chloé Zhao, and Rian Johnson’s new installment, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. A particular highlight this year is the strong presence of actors making their directorial debuts: Scarlett Johansson will present Eleanor the Great; Aziz Ansari brings Good Fortune; Maude Apatow will screen Poetic License; James McAvoy will unveil California Schemin’; and Alex Winter will debut Adulthood.
The documentary section also features notable additions, including Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery, about the iconic female music festival; You Had to Be There, which revisits the origins of the Godspell phenomenon in Toronto; and Degrassi: Whatever It Takes, revisiting the long-running Canadian teen series.
Ibero-American cinema will also have a strong presence, with both award-winning titles and new premieres. From Cannes come Un poeta, by Colombian director Simón Mesa Soto; O agente secreto, by Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho; and Sirāt, by Spain’s Óliver Laxe. They’ll be joined by the world premieres of El cautivo, marking the highly anticipated return of Alejandro Amenábar; It Would Be Night in Caracas, by Mariana Rondón and Marité Ugás; and Three Goodbyes, by Isabel Coixet.
As the grand finale for this milestone edition, TIFF has chosen Peak Everything, a dark comedy by Anne Émond that was also well received in Cannes, to close out a festival that not only celebrates half a century of cinema but also reasserts Toronto’s role as a prime launchpad for the new season.
