The Prince of Nanawa, the new film by Clarisa Navas, was awarded the Grand Jury Prize in the International Feature Film Competition at the prestigious Visions du Réel festival, which is taking place until April 13 in Nyon, Switzerland. The film, a co-production between Argentina, Paraguay, Colombia, and Germany, falls within the observational and identity-exploration cinema that characterizes the work of the Corrientes-born filmmaker.
With a runtime of three and a half hours, the film follows the transformation of Ángel, a child who grows up over the course of a decade between Paraguay and Argentina. The jury, which awarded the prize unanimously, highlighted: “A film where the process and the document are inseparable. With confidence and humility, it moves between autofiction, fiction, and documentary, resisting the narrative of the master. The camera becomes a familiar and communal instrument that passionately records the microcosm of youth negotiating borders. The director’s gaze is hospitable and tender, without sentimentality or exoticism.”
Produced by Gentil Cine (Eugenia Campos Guevara), Tekoha (Sofía Paoli Thorne), Invasión Cine (Jerónimo Atehortúa), and Autentika Films (Paulo De Carvalho), The Prince of Nanawa solidifies its place as one of the key titles in contemporary Latin American cinema.
Visions du Réel 2025 features 129 new productions, of which 88 are world premieres and 12 international premieres. The festival reaffirms its commitment to discovering new talent with the inclusion of 58 debut films, among them 28 first feature films.
