The Last Frontier, a project by Rodrigo Moreno, selected for the Berlinale Co-Production Market
The Last Frontier, an Argentina–Luxembourg co-production directed by Rodrigo Moreno, has been selected to take part in the Berlinale Co-Production Market, one of the most significant platforms within the international audiovisual industry. The project will be the only Argentine title among the 35 feature films chosen from a total of 27 countries.
The 23rd edition of the Berlinale Co-Production Market will take place from February 14 to 17, as part of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival, and will serve as a strategic meeting point for the development of international co-productions. During the event, the producers of the selected projects will meet with around 600 potential co-producers, international sales agents, distributors, and financiers from around the world, with the aim of forging partnerships to move the films into production.
This year’s selection was made from 390 submissions, representing a significant increase compared to the previous edition. Ten of the selected projects are directed by women, and genre diversity is one of the defining features of the lineup. According to Martina Bleis, Director of the Berlinale Co-Production Market, genre cinema—particularly horror and body horror—plays a prominent role in the selection, alongside auteur animation, dramas, thrillers, action films, and comedies. Recurring themes include identity, self-determination, family models, and gender-based violence.
Rodrigo Moreno has a longstanding relationship with the Berlin festival. His debut feature, The Custodian, was supported by the World Cinema Fund and screened in Competition at the Berlinale in 2006, where it received a major award for innovative filmmaking. He later returned to the Competition with A Mysterious World, and in 2023 his film The Delinquents received support from the Berlinale Co-Production Market. In the 2025 edition of the festival, the Argentine filmmaker served as a member of the International Jury.
In addition to financing and networking opportunities, participating projects are eligible for several cash awards. These include the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award, endowed with €20,000; the VFF Talent Highlight Award, worth €10,000; the International ARTEKino Award, endowed with €6,000; and the Gen Z Audience Award, worth €5,000, presented by a jury of film students to a project with particular appeal to young adult audiences.
The program also features the Company Matching initiative, which focuses on strengthening production structures and project slates. This year’s participating companies come from Germany, Spain, Italy, Ukraine, and Brazil.
