The Currents, by Milagros Mumenthaler, selected for the Platform section of the Toronto International Film Festival

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) today announced the lineup for its 2025 Platform section, which marks its tenth anniversary as the Festival’s competitive showcase dedicated to bold directorial vision and distinctive storytelling. Among the ten selected titles is The Currents, the new feature film by Argentine filmmaker Milagros Mumenthaler.

In The Currents, Mumenthaler follows Lina, a 34-year-old fashion professional who, at the height of her career, gives in to a sudden impulse after receiving a prestigious award in Switzerland. Back in Buenos Aires, Lina remains silent about what happened, but something inside her begins to shift: quietly and invisibly, a past she thought she had left behind starts to unravel.

The Currents is a co-production between Switzerland’s Alina Film (Eugenia Mumenthaler) and Ruda Cine (Violeta Bava and Rosa Martínez Rivero). International sales are handled by Luxbox.

This year, the Platform section brings together ten exceptional films from 19 countries, reaffirming its place as a showcase for some of the most promising cinematic voices today. The programme will open with the World Premiere of Steve, by Belgian director Tim Mielants (Small Things Like These, Peaky Blinders), starring Tracey Ullman and Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy. The competition also includes Between Dreams and Hope by Farnoosh Samadi, Bouchra by Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani, Hen by György Pálfi, Nino by Pauline Loquès, Sk+te’kmujue’katik (At the Place of Ghosts) by Bretten Hannam, The World of Love by Yoon Ga-eun, To The Victory! by Valentyn Vasyanovych, and Winter of the Crow by Kasia Adamik.

Under the direction of Robyn Citizen, Platform has become a key space for early- and mid-career filmmakers, helping them gain international visibility. Past Official Selections include acclaimed films such as Riceboy Sleeps, Sound of Metal, Martin Eden, Lady Macbeth, and the Academy Award–winning Moonlight.

All films in this section are eligible for the Platform Award, which comes with a CAD 20,000 cash prize and is decided by an international jury. This year’s Jury Chair is Spanish filmmaker Carlos Marqués-Marcet, winner of the 2024 Platform Award for They Will Be Dust, joined by Oscar-nominated actor, writer and director Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Québécois filmmaker Chloé Robichaud. The award will be presented during the Festival’s closing ceremony on Sunday, September 14.
