& Sons, by Pablo Trapero, will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)

Argentinian filmmaker Pablo Trapero will present his latest work, & Sons, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it will have its world premiere during the Canadian event, running from September 4 to 14.

The production, a collaboration between the United Kingdom and Canada, adapts David Gilbert’s novel of the same name and features a screenplay co-written by Canadian Sarah Polley, who won the Oscar in 2023 for Women Talking. British actor Bill Nighy leads the cast, joined by Noah Jupe and Johnny Flynn.

The story follows Andrew Dyer, a writer marked by alcoholism, who summons all his sons for a tense family gathering in which he decides to reveal a secret he has kept for decades.

A TIFF with 291 titles in its 50th anniversary
The 50th edition of TIFF will bring together 291 films —66 of them short films— and will open with the world premiere of the documentary John Candy: I Like Me, centered on the life of the celebrated Canadian comedian. The closing film will be Peak Everything, a comedy directed by Anne Émond.

Among this year’s world premieres are titles such as El cautivo, by Alejandro Amenábar; Tre Ciotole, by Isabel Coixet; Forastera, the debut feature by Lucía Aleñar Iglesias; the Colombian Noviembre, by Tomás Corredor; Oca, by Karla Badillo; Las corrientes, by Milagros Mumenthaler; La hija cóndor, by Álvaro Olmos Torrico; and Bajo el mismo sol, by Ulises Porra.

The festival will also feature open talks with figures such as Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, Tessa Thompson, and Nia DaCosta. In addition, it will screen works that have previously appeared at other festivals, such as No Other Choice by Park Chan-wook, The Wizard of the Kremlin by Olivier Assayas, and Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or winner A Simple Accident.
