“Roots of Memory”

Por Franco Alves

A short film that invites reflection on the bonds between nature and human memory. Directed by Antonio La Camera, the film unfolds in the Peruvian Amazon and proposes a sensorial journey in which the protagonists, two “sibling” trees that once were human, recover fragments of their past lives. This fantastic premise is used as a metaphor to question our contemporary disconnection from the environment.

The short stands out for its contemplative atmosphere. The camera lingers on the rhythms of the jungle, on the humidity that envelops everything, and on the stillness that conveys mystery. There is no rush in its storytelling, which may become a virtue or an obstacle depending on the viewer. Those who enjoy slow and emotional cinematic experiences will find a profound narrative; those seeking a more traditional storyline may feel distant from a structure that privileges visual poetry over action.

One of the most discussed elements is the participation of Apichatpong Weerasethakul as artistic supervisor. His influence can be sensed in the film’s approach to spirituality and in the fusion of the real and the dreamlike. Nature is not merely a backdrop, but a character that breathes and holds the world’s history. This approach creates a ritualistic tone, as if observing the trees were a way to access an ancient memory.

The film suggests that human and plant life share a common destiny: to grow, to take root in a territory, and eventually to be lost in time. Through the gaze of the trees, the viewer confronts the smallness of human existence and the importance of protecting what will endure beyond our absence. The ecological message is conveyed without explicit speeches, which strengthens its emotional resonance.

However, the narrative may feel cryptic. The short offers no detailed explanations nor a conventional dramatic progression. Every interpretation depends on the viewer, which can lead to ambiguity. The lost memories of these trees become a cinematic experience that prioritizes sensitivity over logic. It serves as a reminder that our stories could disappear if we forget our relationship with the land that sustains us. Its aesthetic proposal invites us to fully open our senses and let ourselves be guided by images filled with deep poetic emotion.
