Cannes 2025 Announces New Films in Its Official Selection: Lav Diaz, Lynne Ramsay, Hlynur Pálmason, and Ethan Coen Among the Highlights

The Cannes Film Festival continues to unveil surprises for its 78th edition with the addition of new films to its official selection. Among the most anticipated titles are Magalhães, by acclaimed Filipino director Lav Diaz, which will screen in the Premieres section; Die, My Love, the latest work from Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson; Ástin Sem Eftir Er by Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason, also in Premieres; and Honey Don’t! by Ethan Coen, featured in the Midnight section.

With Magalhães, Lav Diaz once again delves into the history and politics of his country through a poetic and radical lens, reaffirming his position as one of the most powerful voices in contemporary cinema. Its screening at Cannes marks another milestone in his internationally acclaimed career, long associated with prestigious festivals.

Lynne Ramsay, meanwhile, returns to the Croisette following the impact of You Were Never Really Here (2017), with a psychological thriller based on Ariana Harwicz’s novel. Die, My Love is set in rural America and follows a woman’s descent into madness after giving birth, while her husband remains oblivious to her suffering. The film was screened for the selection committee after the festival’s official press conference and has been added to the main competition. Ramsay is one of seven female directors in competition this year — a record for the festival.

Celebrated for his visual sensitivity and exploration of landscape and spirituality, Hlynur Pálmason will present Ástin Sem Eftir Er (translated as The Love That Remains) in the Premieres section, further cementing his place as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Nordic cinema.

In the Midnight section, Ethan Coen returns to Cannes with Honey Don’t!, an irreverent comedy that promises to blend his signature dark humor with elements of genre cinema. The film marks a new chapter in his solo career, after decades of co-directing with his brother Joel.

Other films joining the lineup include The Chronology of Water by Kristen Stewart (Un Certain Regard); Mother and Child by Saeed Roustaee (Competition); Un Poeta by Simón Mesa Soto; Love Me Tender by Anna Cazenave Cambet; O Riso E A Faca by Pedro Pinho (all in Un Certain Regard); Renai Saiban by Kōji Fukada; and Le Roi Soleil by Vincent Maël Cardona.
