The Argentine company Rei Pictures, internationally recognized for its work with filmmaker Lucrecia Martel and for a distinguished track record at top-tier festivals, has announced an ambitious expansion plan that includes the opening of offices in Spain and Mexico, as well as diversification into television, talent management, and full-scale production services.
Originally founded under the name Rei Cine, the production house has been behind acclaimed titles such as Zama and the recent world premiere at Venice of Landmarks (Nuestra tierra), both directed by Martel. Its credits also include the 2024 Venice competition entry Kill the Jockey, Cannes winner The Settlers, and Sundance-awarded Queen of Fear. Rei Pictures is also credited as co-producer of Amalia Ulman’s comedy Magic Farm, starring Chloë Sevigny and Alex Wolff, now streaming on Mubi.
To strengthen its international expansion, the company has partnered with Primo Content, one of the most relevant names in the regional advertising market, with a presence in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Uruguay, and the United States. Primo has backed projects from renowned filmmakers such as Kleber Mendonça Filho (The Secret Agent) and Ira Sachs (Peter Hujar’s Day), as well as having produced Gastón Solnicki’s The Souffleur, also showcased in Venice.
Rei Pictures’ move comes at a time of instability in public film incentive systems in Argentina and other Latin American countries, pushing production companies to diversify both geographically and across business areas. Spain, with a more favorable environment in terms of tax incentives, and Mexico, with a growing market, stand out as key elements in this strategy. With its operations reinforced, Rei Pictures aims to expand the development and production of original series, strengthen its talent management division, and provide large-scale production services for international shoots in Latin America and Spain.
The new offices in Madrid and Mexico City will serve as strategic bases to foster alliances with creatives and production companies in both Europe and the Americas. The company expects its previous co-production network to act as a bridge for generating fresh opportunities.
“We are thrilled to open our doors alongside partners like Primo, who share our values and our mission to promote original voices in Latin America and now also in Europe. We believe this alliance will create unexpected opportunities for the community of talent at the heart of Rei Pictures,” said Benjamin Domenech, producer and co-founder of the company.
For his part, Nicolás Pérez Veiga, co-founder of Primo Content, emphasized: “We have long admired Rei Pictures’ editorial vision. When we decided to expand into feature films, they were the natural choice. Together we aspire to build a global platform for bold, original voices in cinema.”
