La libertad doble, by Lisandro Alonso, has been selected for the official competition of the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes
Argentine director Lisandro Alonso’s new film, La libertad doble, has been selected for the official competition of the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, one of the most prestigious sections of the renowned French cinema event.
The film arrives nearly 25 years after Alonso’s debut with La libertad, and serves as a sequel to that inaugural work. With it, the director returns to the intimate, austere and contemplative style that launched him onto the international scene in the early 2000s. That debut feature was the starting point of a trilogy that continued with Los muertos — also presented at Cannes — and concluded with Fantasma, cementing Alonso as one of the most distinctive voices in Latin American cinema, celebrated for his minimalist storytelling, long silences, and deep exploration of time and space.
Over the course of his career, the filmmaker has added titles such as Liverpool (2008), centered on a sailor’s return to Tierra del Fuego, and Jauja (2014), a period drama that won the FIPRESCI Prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section. His most recent film, Eureka, described as an “Amerindian fable,” explored Indigenous communities across the American continent, weaving together different historical periods and territories in a shoot spanning four countries, marked by logistical challenges and pandemic-related delays.
The 2026 Directors’ Fortnight, celebrating its 58th edition, will also feature other noteworthy titles, including Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude’s new film The Diary of a Chambermaid, and La perra, by Chilean director Dominga Sotomayor. The section will open with Butterfly Fly, the English-language debut of Russian director Kantemir Balagov, known for his acclaimed 2019 drama Beanpole. Closing duties fall to Le Vertige, one of three animated features in the lineup, directed by Quentin Dupieux.
