“A Journey of Emotions and Discovery”

Por Laura Santos

There are films that arrive gently, without pretension, and settle into the spectator’s memory as if they were a personal recollection. Estrany riu (Strange River) is one of those works that transports us to a space that is both intimate and universal, where the passage of time, nature, and personal experience converge in a profoundly human story. The film invites us to follow a family cycling along the banks of the Danube in what, at first glance, appears to be just another summer holiday. Yet beneath the lightness of the journey lies a much deeper pulse: the search for identity, the encounter with the unknown, and the need to surrender to the current, like the river itself that accompanies the protagonists. The story unfolds like a summer reverie, moving between the apparent calm of family routine and the irruption of the unexpected, reminding us that summer is that suspended time in which everything seems possible and each moment can mark a before and after.

One of the film’s greatest achievements is its script, written jointly by Jaume Claret Muxart and Meritxell Colell Aparicio. It is a work that reflects a luminous creative complicity, capable of transforming a summer anecdote into a narrative of emotional depth. The writing avoids the obvious and trusts the sensitivity of the viewer, steering clear of familiar formulas and offering instead a poetic and sincere discourse. Colell Aparicio brings her delicate gaze toward the everyday and the strength of her experience, while Claret Muxart imbues the script with his intimate relationship with the river and with the journeys of his youth. From this fusion emerges a screenplay that does more than tell a story: it opens a space where each person can recognize themselves, filling in the silences, glances, and emotions with their own memories. The result is a text full of truth, one that turns the flow of the Danube into something more than just a setting: it becomes a symbol of life itself, of its unpredictability, and of its power to carry us toward unknown places.

The Danube appears as an emotional mirror and a constant reminder that existence never stops but continues its course, sometimes serene and sometimes turbulent. The family traveling along its banks experiences it as a territory of freedom, with improvised nights and days in which the destination matters less than simply moving forward together. Yet in the midst of this adventure arises an unexpected encounter that alters the course of the summer and awakens within the protagonist a hidden inner force. It is not simply an incipient love or a passing anecdote, but a turning point that opens questions about desire, identity, and belonging. What is extraordinary about the script is the way it addresses this transformation without excesses or dramatization, relying instead on the intensity of minimal gestures and the depth of emotions that are sensed more than spoken. In this way, the young man’s personal awakening becomes a metaphor for that stage of life in which everything is seen through a mix of vertigo and fascination, where every experience feels both definitive and fleeting at the same time.

Estrany riu belongs to the tradition of coming-of-age tales, but it does so with its own voice that distinguishes and elevates it. It does not seek to repeat patterns or offer morals, but to invite the viewer to recognize something of themselves within the story. It is a work to be enjoyed while watching, but above all one that lingers afterward, evoking past summers, family trips, unexpected encounters, and first emotions that leave a permanent mark. Each spectator can fill in the gaps with their own memories, and much of its power lies there. Ultimately, what this film proposes is a hymn to inner freedom, to the possibility of making mistakes and growing, to the beauty of those fleeting instants that stay with us throughout life. It is not just a film about a river or about a bicycle holiday; it is a metaphor for the passage of life, a cinematic poem that reminds us that to live is to dare to navigate uncharted waters. And in that journey, the script co-written with Meritxell Colell Aparicio shines as both compass and companion, offering us a sensitive, courageous, and profoundly moving work.
