82nd Venice Film Festival: Lucrecia Martel to premiere “Nuestra tierra” out of competition while Alejo Moguillansky and Gastón Solnicki compete in Orizzonti

The Venice Biennale has unveiled the full lineup for the 82nd edition of its prestigious Film Festival, which will run from August 27 to September 6, once again confirming the strong presence of Argentine cinema at one of the world’s oldest and most renowned film events.

Among the highlights is the world premiere of Nuestra tierra, the highly anticipated new feature by Lucrecia Martel, which will be screened out of competition, just as Zama was in its time. On this occasion, Martel — one of the most influential voices in contemporary Latin American cinema — reconstructs the story of the murder of Indigenous activist Javier Chocobar and the expulsion of his community from their ancestral lands. The film unravels 500 years of actions, weapons, and cameras that led to this shooting, and situates it within the broader land tenure system that has shaped the history of Latin America.

In the official Orizzonti section, dedicated to new trends and emerging voices, two Argentine directors will compete for international recognition: Alejo Moguillansky with Pin de Fartie and Gastón Solnicki, who will present The Souffleur, starring none other than Willem Dafoe. Solnicki’s film is a mostly Austrian co-production, produced by Gabriele Kranzelbinder and Paolo Calamita (Museum Hours) for Little Magnet Films and KGP Filmproduktion, together with Eugenio Fernández Abril for Primo (Peter Hujar’s Day) and Solnicki himself for Filmy Wiktora.

The Argentine presence in Venice is rounded out by Un cabo suelto, the new comedy by Daniel Hendler, which will be featured in the Spotlight section, also out of competition. The Uruguayan actor and director presents his third feature film here, shot in April and May in Fray Bentos and Montevideo, co-produced by Cordón Films (Uruguay) and Wanka Cine (Argentina). Starring Sergio Prina, Pilar Gamboa, and César Troncoso, among others, the film follows Santiago, an Argentine police officer who flees to Uruguay while improvising his survival among cheeses, cured meats, and a possible romance.

This year’s festival will also showcase films by Olivier Assayas, Jim Jarmusch, Noah Baumbach, Guillermo del Toro, Kathryn Bigelow, Gus Van Sant, Yorgos Lanthimos, Werner Herzog, Aleksandr Sokurov, and Tsai Ming-liang, reaffirming its status as one of the great launching platforms for the awards season. In this context, the notable presence of Argentine filmmakers promises to expand the visibility of national cinema on the international stage and strengthen the position of directors and producers who continue to build a sustained presence at the world’s leading film festivals.
