The participation of Casabé and Ulman reinforces the growing presence of Argentine cinema at international festivals. Both films promise to stand out for their innovative narratives and unique perspectives, representing the talent and diversity of cinematic voices from the region.
The 2025 Sundance Film Festival will take place from January 16 to 26 in Park City, Utah, attracting filmmakers, critics, and film enthusiasts from around the world. With these films on the lineup, Argentine cinema is poised to be one of the event’s highlights.
The Virgin of Quarry Lake (La virgen de la tosquera), a co-production between Argentina, Spain, and Mexico, features a top-tier creative team. Directed by Laura Casabé and written by Benjamín Naishtat, the film is produced by Tomás Eloy Muñoz, Valeria Bistagnino, Alejandro Israel, David Matamoros, Ángeles Hernández, and Diego Martínez Ulanosky. Set in 2001 in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, the story explores the complex dynamics among three teenagers who fall in love with the same boy, Diego. Just as Natalia seems ready to begin a relationship with him, the arrival of Silvia, an older and more experienced girl, radically alters the situation.
Meanwhile, Magic Farm, by Amalia Ulman, marks a collaboration between Argentina and the United States. Written and directed by Ulman, the project is produced by Alex Hughes, Eugene Kotlyarenko, and Riccardo Maddalosso. The film follows a media company’s film crew traveling to Argentina to profile a local musician but ends up in the wrong destination. This mishap leads to a series of unexpected events and unforeseen connections, all while a looming health crisis quietly unfolds in the background.
