The liars, directed by Eduardo Braun Costa, was selected for the International Short Film Competition at Sundance 2026

The short film The Liars, directed by Eduardo Braun Costa and produced by Manuel Aguer and Natasha Gurfinkel, has been selected to compete in the International Short Film Competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, one of the most significant platforms for independent cinema worldwide. The film will have its world premiere at the festival and will be available to audiences through the event’s online platform.

The film tells the story of Matías and Jaime, two young men abruptly thrust into adulthood as they try to make sense of the world around them. The narrative is set in motion when Jaime is detained by a security guard at a shopping mall, and Matías is forced to ask a stranger to pretend to be his father in order to secure his release. The cast includes Noah Roja, Filippo Carrozza, Esteban Bigliardi, Mariana Chaud, and Pablo Fusco.

The announcement was made by the Sundance Institute, which revealed the 54 short films selected for the 2026 edition of the festival. The works will be screened across eight curated short film programs, showcasing a wide diversity of genres and styles spanning fiction, non-fiction, and animation, and representing different parts of the world. In addition, the festival will feature a special program titled Park City Legacy, which will include standout short films from previous editions, with their filmmakers in attendance.

The 2026 Sundance Film Festival will take place in person from January 22 to February 1 in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah. Audiences nationwide will also have access to an online program from January 29 to February 1, which will include all films in competition, additional selections of feature films and episodic content, and the short film program presented by Ketel One Vodka. Individual tickets for in-person and virtual screenings will go on sale on January 14 at 10:00 a.m. Mountain Time.

Throughout the festival, audiences will be able to take part in daily screenings, talks, and special events. Premieres will take place between Thursday, January 22, and Tuesday, January 27, in Park City. The 2026 edition will also serve as a significant tribute to Robert Redford and his vision, which has inspired generations of artists and helped redefine contemporary cinema.

According to the Institute, the selection of the 54 short films was drawn from a total of 11,480 submissions, 6,566 of which were international productions. The program brings together works from 22 countries and territories, reinforcing the festival’s global profile. In this context, the inclusion of Los Mentirosos in the international competition represents a notable recognition for the project and its creators.

Kim Yutani, Director of Programming at the Sundance Film Festival, highlighted that the short films selected for 2026 showcase the creative talent that exists within the short format, noting that the stories address themes such as belonging, resilience, and the unexpected ways people confront both the everyday and the extraordinary. Similarly, Senior Programmer Heidi Zwicker emphasized the inventiveness and diversity of the program, which spans a wide range of genres, styles, and narrative worlds.
