Projects by Ekain Albite, Rod Llaverías, Inês Nunes, Gala Hernández, Kavich Neang and Valeria Hofmann selected for the twelfth edition of Ikusmira Berriak

The twelfth edition of Ikusmira Berriak has selected six film projects that, from a range of formal approaches, address issues such as the climate crisis, family relationships, the body, industrial legacy, and the impact of the digital environment. The programme, promoted by the San Sebastián International Film Festival, Tabakalera and Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, received a total of 488 submissions—the highest number to date—and reaffirms its commitment to new voices: five of the selected projects are debut features and one is a second feature.

In the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola category, the selected project is The Spirit Healer is Away for the Weekend by Portuguese director Inês Nunes, which follows two women in a Lisbon shaped by extreme heat and tourism. In the Nest category, La Canícula by Rod Llaverías was chosen; the project explores care, grief and trauma through four women living in a family house in Santo Domingo. The Basque category will feature Akira by Ekain Albite, a nocturnal and spectral road movie starring two Georgian scrap dealers.

The Spanish category has selected Los animales magnéticos by Gala Hernández López, a Gothic horror fiction about two women enigmatically connected across time. In the international category, the chosen projects are Daemon by Chilean director Valeria Hofmann, which focuses on the margins of the technological system, and Chas Khouch Kmeng Ropus / Bad Man Good Boy by Cambodian filmmaker Kavich Neang, a coming-of-age story that reflects on family and life under an authoritarian context.

The residencies will take place over eight weeks across two periods, from March to April and in September, based at Tabakalera and concluding during the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Throughout the programme, the filmmakers will receive tailored professional mentoring, development funding, and opportunities to meet with industry professionals.
