The Cannes Film Festival will hold its 80th edition from Tuesday, May 11 to Saturday, May 22, 2027, the French festival has confirmed. Dates for the Marché du Film, the film market that runs alongside the festival, have not yet been announced.

Founded in 1946, Cannes will mark its 80th edition with a program of events dedicated to revisiting the festival’s history and its relationship with the city. In its early years, the postwar context affected the development of the festival: several hotels in Cannes were still housing soldiers from the U.S. armed forces. The festival was cancelled in 1948 and 1950 for budgetary reasons.

Today, the festival brings together more than 52,000 accredited participants from around 150 countries, including around 4,000 journalists, and generates an estimated €220 million in direct annual economic impact, according to figures from the Cannes City Council cited by EFE. The city was originally chosen as the festival’s home for its climate and hotel infrastructure, which was considered suitable for an international event of this scale.

The anniversary celebrations will begin this year with a series of activities and continue through September 2027. They will include three conferences on the festival’s origins, two featuring General Delegate Thierry Frémaux and another with historian Olivier Loubes. A meeting with Ruben Östlund is also planned, followed by screenings of The Square and Triangle of Sadness, the two films by the Swedish director that won the Palme d’Or.

The 2027 film lineup will be announced in April. Among the films already generating anticipation are new works by Ruben Östlund (The Entertainment System Is Down), Justine Triet (Fonda), Alice Rohrwacher (Three Incestuous Sisters) and Alexander Payne (Somewhere Out There). The 2026 edition awarded the Palme d’Or to Fjord, directed by Cristian Mungiu.
