Cannes announced new additions to the official selection of its 79th edition

The Cannes Film Festival has announced new additions to the official selection of its 79th edition, bringing in notable productions that further strengthen an already competitive and diverse lineup.

Among the highlights is “Victorian Psycho,” the new horror film directed by Zachary Wigon and starring Maika Monroe, who is well known within the genre for her roles in thrillers and horror. The actress plays Winifred Notty, an eccentric governess who arrives at a secluded Gothic mansion known as Ensor House. As she attempts to adapt to life there, members of the staff begin to mysteriously disappear, raising suspicions about her true nature.

The cast is rounded out by Thomasin McKenzie, Jason Isaacs, Amy De Bruhn, and Jacobi Jupe. The film is produced by Dan Kagan under his Traffic banner, alongside Sebastien Raybaud for Anton, in association with Anonymous Content.

Another notable addition is “Ashes,” directed by and starring Diego Luna, which will screen in the Special Screenings section. Meanwhile, filmmaker Judith Godrèche will present “A Girl’s Story” in the Un Certain Regard section.

Also joining that section is “Titanic Ocean,” by Greek director Konstantina Kotzamani. The coming-of-age story is set in a special boarding school in Japan, where teenage girls are trained to become professional mermaids. The production is led by Athens-based Homemade Films, in co-production with Wunderlust, Defilm, Manny Films, Frida Films, and Happinet Phantom Studios.

In the main competition for the Palme d’Or, “Paper Tiger,” the new crime thriller by James Gray, has been added. The film features a high-profile cast led by Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Miles Teller.

The story follows two brothers striving to achieve the American dream, only to become entangled in a scheme that proves too good to be true. As they are drawn deeper into an increasingly dangerous world of corruption and violence, they and their family are brutally threatened by the Russian mafia. The mounting tension puts their fraternal bond to the test, opening the door to an unthinkable betrayal.

Distributor Neon has already acquired North American rights to this highly anticipated title, which is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about films on the Croisette.
