Belén, Dolores Fonzi’s new film, will compete in the International Competition at the San Sebastián Film Festival

Argentinian actress, screenwriter, and director Dolores Fonzi will compete in the Official Selection of the 73rd San Sebastián International Film Festival with Belén, her second feature as a filmmaker. The film, co-written with Laura Paredes and starring Fonzi alongside Camila Plaate and Paredes, is based on a true story and follows a lawyer from Tucumán who leads the defense of a young woman imprisoned after suffering a spontaneous abortion. The festival, set to take place from September 19 to 27, will serve as the international platform for this work, which vies for the Golden Shell and continues Fonzi’s path after her directorial debut Blondi (2023), also screened in San Sebastián.

The festival also announced the participation of new works by renowned filmmakers such as Edward Berger, Claire Denis, Joachim Lafosse, Olmo Omerzu, Xiaoyu Qin, and James Vanderbilt, while Juliette Binoche will present her directorial debut out of competition and Junji Sakamoto will premiere his latest film. Argentina’s presence will be further strengthened by Las corrientes, directed by Milagros Mumenthaler, which is also in the running for the top prize, underscoring the country’s strong representation at one of Europe’s most prestigious film events.
