Argentine filmmakers Valeria Pivato, María Astrauskas, and Diego Martínez Ulanosky are part of the official selection of the 14th Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum at the San Sebastián Film Festival

Argentine filmmakers Valeria Pivato, María Astrauskas, and Diego Martínez Ulanosky are part of the official selection for the 14th Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, which will take place from September 22 to 24 as part of the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Their projects are among the 15 chosen from a total of 268 submissions, representing nine countries.

The forum, aimed at promoting the development and visibility of new productions, will allow each team to present their project to potential partners and industry representatives, with the goal of securing financing and opening doors to international markets.

Pivato will present La ilusión de un paraíso (An Illusion of Paradise), her first solo feature, produced by Juan Pablo Miller (Tarea Fina) with a screenplay by Leonel D’Agostino. The story follows Elvira and Joaquín, a married couple who, after decades together, move to a house overlooking a Patagonian lake. There, Elvira begins to uncover unsettling sides of her husband and must decide whether to accept the situation or confront it, risking her family’s future.

Astrauskas will showcase Patrimonio (Patrimony), which she wrote and directed, set in her hometown of Tandil. The protagonist, known as Toni but whose real name is Aurora, drives trucks in a granite quarry, a trade inherited from her father. Her life is upended when she discovers an outstanding debt for a vehicle her father registered in her name over 15 years ago. Her search for answers leads her to piece together family memories and rediscover a lost world.

Martínez Ulanosky will present No es un río (Not a River), an adaptation of the novel by Selva Almada, co-produced by Caponeto (Mexico) and Ajiomolido Films (Argentina). The plot follows a teenager who joins two old friends of his late father on a fishing trip to the island where his father died. Set between the 1960s and 1990s, the film explores brotherhood, guilt, and the unspoken truths that linger over time.

In addition to the three Argentine projects, the selection features filmmakers from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Panama, Romania, and Uruguay. Eleven of the selected works are debut or sophomore films, reinforcing the forum’s role as a platform for emerging voices.

Since its inception in 2012, the forum has supported 215 projects, nearly half of which have gone on to be released in theaters and showcased at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Locarno, and San Sebastián itself.
