Albert Serra finished shooting Out of This World in Latvia, a political drama about the rivalry between the United States and Russia

The Catalan filmmaker Albert Serra has completed the shooting of his new film Out of This World, an ambitious international co-production filmed in Latvia that wrapped on September 17, 2025.

The film stars Riley Keough —who replaced Kristen Stewart after she left the project last March due to disagreements over the script— alongside F. Murray Abraham, Liza Yankovskaya, and Birte von Knoblauch. Serra, true to his bold style, now ventures into a contemporary political drama: the story follows a U.S. delegation traveling to Russia amid the war in Ukraine in an attempt to resolve an economic conflict linked to international sanctions, in a narrative that directly addresses the historic rivalry between the two powers.

The production brought together companies from France, Spain, Portugal, Latvia, and the United States, and received support from Eurimages, which contributed half a million euros. The project has been closely followed since its announcement, partly due to the change in leading actress and also because of the anticipation generated around its politically charged subject matter.

Although no release date has yet been confirmed, Out of This World is expected to premiere on the international festival circuit in 2026, with Cannes as the leading candidate for its world premiere. Expectations are high: Serra, known for works such as Liberté and Pacifiction, promises once again to challenge audiences with a cinema that blends the political, the poetic, and the unsettling — this time within the framework of today’s most urgent geopolitical conflict.
