The new feature film by Argentine director Clarisa Navas, They Burn the Same Way, has been selected to take part in the 13th edition of the Venice Gap-Financing Market, to be held September 4–6 as part of the Venice Production Bridge at the Venice Film Festival (Mostra di Venezia).

The project is among a selection of 38 titles seeking to complete their international financing through individual meetings with potential co-producers, funds, and investors. In total, the market will present 66 projects at various advanced stages of development and financing, including fiction features, documentaries, immersive projects, and proposals from the Biennale College Cinema.

They Burn the Same Way is set in a social housing neighborhood in Corrientes, where Ezequiel confronts the recent death of Tomás, his firefighter boyfriend, as a devastating wave of fires threatens the city. Against this backdrop, his friends Ava and Juana begin a romantic relationship marked by the prejudices of those around them and the imminent gender-affirming surgery of one of them. Amid the smoke, a dengue epidemic, motorcycles, small everyday acts of resistance, and the organizing of a neighborhood assembly, the film builds a queer, post-apocalyptic-toned melodrama that reflects on grief, desire, and the possibility of collective action in times of crisis.

Executive production is by Eugenia Campos Guevara, of the production company Gentil Cine SRL.

The market’s selection also includes new projects by acclaimed international filmmakers such as Jessica Hausner, who will present Toxic; Lav Diaz, with An Entry Into A Portuguese Woman’s Sadness; and Ursula Meier, with Quiet Land. Projects by Lila Avilés, Payal Sethi, and Asmae El Moudir were also selected.
